"ATS" IN A NUTSHELL

An automated ticketing system (ATS) is the collection of components that automate the ticketing system & organizes the entrance process of a mass transit area - an automated version of manual ticketing system. It is the name given to the system that enables electronic payment for public entrances like theme parks, stadiums, malls, fun rides etc.

ATS is one of the transit entrance related technologies that go under the name of Intelligent Ticketing System (ITS). ITS basically involves the addition of information and communication technologies to ticketing entrance infrastructure, in order to increase throughput and safety.

The system can be broadly divided in two parts:

  • Ticketing system for Pedestrians
  • Ticketing system for Vehicular Traffic

Pedestrian Ticketing :

Basically it is a convenient & simple method of buying your valid tickets from the counters & the visitors validates it on each entry & exit for authentication. This method of Automatic Ticketing Entrance to restricted areas is widely accepted worldwide & the most convenient safe & tested methods.

The ticket is available in the form of a preprinted paper tickets. You purchase the same from a ticket counter. From herein you move ahead to one of the gates which consist of flap barriers or tripods. You will be required to hold your ticket/token close to a machine on the right side of the barriers. The barriers give way if your ticket is valid. If not you will not be permitted inside & the barrier does not open & gives a flashing error message.

Configuration of the tickets, the validity & other distinctive features are embedded in the ticket only at the time of issuing of the tickets from counters. This encoding is done through the ticket issuer/validator. This is done in a secured encrypted form so that any form of duplicity can be avoided.

Also optionally Automatic Ticket Vending Machines can be placed at strategic locations in order to avoid long queues in the ticket counters. These machines would dispense tickets as & when required by visitors according to the denominations.

Automatic Ticket Vending Machine (ATVM) :

  • Industrial PC
  • Tamperproof touch screen monitor

The Ticket Vending Machine is a self-service terminal. Its main functionality is to offer commuters means of buying fare ticket for their journey. A commuter selects ticket of his/her choice and pays using banknotes and coins. Optionally, the ATVM can also support other payment type such as credit/debit cards. ATVM allows commuter through purchase process with help of suitable display information, route-map comprises touch-points, multi-lingual support and selections with touch screen inputs, so that the entire ticket vending process is performed intuitively. This Ticket Vending Machine is built with security in-mind such as hardened plating, tamperproof touch screen, triple-step-doorlock, double layer lock for coin depository and multiple alarm trigger points to prevent unauthorized access. Apart from sales process, the Ticket Vending Machine is built in with many maintenance friendly features. All transactional data and audit history are uploaded to central servers on scheduled basis via network link.

Ticket Collection Gate :

  • Intelligent Microprocessor based Controller
  • Turnstile or Flap Barriers or P Gate or Tripod Turnstiles
  • Ticket identifier / acceptor machine
  • Indicator with LED / LCD display

Ticket Collection Gate (TCG) is an equipment setup and mounted in station separating paid and unpaid areas. It allows passengers to move from the unpaid area to the paid area or vice versa. In order to pass through the gates, passengers will need to purchase a ticket from Ticket Vending Machines (TVM) or Booking Office Machine (BOM) from ticket counters. TCGs are developed in various designs and functionalities to cater to your unique requirements. Automatic Ticket Collection Gates can be customized using turnstile-based, flap-based or swing-based barriers. It can be customized to be built in with contactless-based smart card, barcode ticket reader, or magnetic strip readers based system. Station Central server totally control them & communicate with them seamlessly & perform various configurations online.

Booking Office Machine (BOM) :

  • Industrial PC
  • LCD Monitor
  • Ticket Issuing Machine
  • Cash Register
  • Receipt Printer

Booking Office Machine (BOM) is a PC based system designed for ticket sales staff to record payment and issue fare tickets to commuters. It can also issue tickets not available via ATVM, i.e. seasonal trips, monthly passes etc. This Booking Office Machine (BOM) is equipped with additional components like Ticket Issuing Machine, Cash Register and UPS. The system is designed to be fast -processing, intuitive and simple to ease ticket sales during busy hours of long-queues. Transactional and sales audit data are smartly synchronized to Central Server either batch or online processing automatically.

Ticket Collection & Management Software :

TCMS is a Graphical User Interface (GUI) PC-based system designed to supervise, integrate and control all station - level equipments i.e. Ticket Vending Machine (ATVM), Access Control Ticket Collection Gate (TCG), or Booking Office Machine (BOM) etc. TCMS collects all the data including daily transactions, audit, gate entrances, alarm history from connected station-level systems and synchronize them with Central Management System (CMS) in the HQ via network link. Ticket Collection & Management Software is administrat or’s gateway into station -level systems; therefore all communications, interfacing files, databases within are secured via encryption and CRC verification.

Why ATS:

The introduction of ATS provides essential social and economic benefits.

Administration gets a vital tool for the control and accounting of the work of ticketing entrance control. This in turn allows scope for improvements in the quality of service to visitors; improve the system of financing amenities and to provide high quality expense forecasts for the facilities budget.

Agencies can improve fare collections, can account for the actual effect on revenue of concessional tickets, and have an on-line tool for the control of rolling stock.

Visitors gets better facilities & services, new rolling stock, and a wide spectrum of tickets that can provide economies on the purchase of tickets.

Advantages for Visitors

  • Comfortable & Hassle Free Entry : Implementation of ATS allows agencies to add up to the amenities & facilities with the assured revenues generated.
  • Reduced Crowding : ATS helps analysis of visitor traffic & allows optimization of the ticketing system capacity by redeployment of additional ticketing gates during peak hours & lesser in non peak hours. This makes visitor movement more comfortable to them.
  • Convenient Ticket Purchase : Implementation of ATS enables easy, safe, and secure & hassle free ticket purchases for passengers.

Advantages for Administration

  • Increased fare collection & revenue The increase is due to the following factors: Every visitors needs to pay the fare for accessing facility & ticketless travel is not allowed by the system.Visitors who use fake concession cards begin to pay as the whole process is automated & can’t be cheated on.
  • Rational management of the whole ticketing system

Overview :

Automatic Ticket Collection system has huge potential & wide products development scope in mass transit areas such as in the entrances of Parks, Auditoriums, Museums etc. It mostly works on RFID technology involving smart cards or bar code based tickets/tokens or cards. Each terminals or stations are equipped with FLAP BARRIERS or TURNSTILE TRIPODS for passenger transit with valid tickets or tokens. Once the validation is done of the tokens through the TOKEN/TICKET VALIDATORS attached with the flap barriers/tripods, it automatically grants access to the token/ticket holders & opens up its walkway for passenger movement. The barriers are well equipped & intelligent enough to detect the passenger movement & close the barrier wings/arms once the passenger walks through it. Thereafter it again waits for the next validation & the next valid passenger to pass through.

The tokens/tickets are issued from the counters through TOKEN/TICKET ISSUING TERMINALS which are coded uniquely with the date time stamp along with the destination code. All these coding are done with special key characters & are all in encrypted from for security reasons. Hence possibilities of duplicating the tokens/tickets are totally nullified.

In the case of tokens, TOKEN DROP BOXES are attached on the exit side of the flap barriers for the visitors to drop the tokens while exiting or ending their journey as tokens are costly & needs to be reused which is economically viable. These boxes can be designed according to the requirement & the traffic flow so that it can accommodate enough no. of tokens. The main intention behind putting these TOKEN DROP BOXES is to avoid the visitors carrying back the tokens along with them. Visitors need to drop in their tokens onto the drop boxes at their respective exits. This will allow them safe exit through the exit flap/tripod barriers.

All these transactions are kept online through a high speed TCP/IP network.

The data transactions are all done locally as well as directly transmitted to the central server for the safety of data. All these are safely stored in the database with adequate security.

ATS Barriers

The software plays a very important role in the whole system. It pertains to the heart of the whole system. All the settable logics, routes, fares, rules etc are closely knit in the software. The software runs in web architecture & is accessible to all terminals through the laid TCP/IP network.

Scability of ATS :

As said earlier, the possibilities are infinite in ATS for automation; Automatic Ticket Vending Machines/Kiosks (ATVM) can also be integrated with ATS. In future, Contact Less Smart Prepaid Cards can also be used & issued to visitors for getting their tokens/tickets for their respective services/rides/entries etc through ATVMs. They themselves can choose facility/services & through an easy to use touch screen interface built in the ATVM & inserts their prepaid smart cards for the fare transaction. This enables tokens/tickets to be dispensed through ATVM accordingly. The specified amount gets deducted from the smart card according to the desired route & journey. This will further reduce visitors standing in long queues & waiting for their turn for getting their tokens/tickets. Hence the whole premise can be operated cashless even for shopping/restaurants etc the same card can be utilized.

This system wi ll not only reduce cash transactions at the ticket counters but also help the visitors to avoid long queues for the recharge of their cards as well. Also the good old way of recharge/top up of Smart Cards can be done through token/ticket issuing counters manually by ticket counter person as well through the online recharge terminal provided the amount can be paid by cash in the counters by the visitors availing this facility.
